Travelling Through Seoul

A couple of my friends and I recently traveled to Seoul, South Korea for 3 weeks as our graduation trip. Seoul is a beautiful and unique city that was fun to explore. We definitely learned many things while travelling which I won't be able to explain in only one post. So first, here are some basic things I noticed while travelling through Seoul.

The Weather:
We were in Seoul for the majority of the month of May which is spring season; although we unfortunately missed cherry blossom season (ends in April). Surprisingly, the first two weeks in Seoul were very hot, most days were 25-28°C, however, the 3rd week started to get colder and had temperatures between 20-23°C. I wasn't really prepared for such warm temperatures and so I packed more jeans and regretted not bringing more shorts.

The Clothes:
Although I regretted not bringing more shorts because it was so hot, I'm kind of glad I didn't bring them just because no one else was really wearing them. I really couldn't understand Korean fashion while I was there; whenever it was deadly hot during the day, all the locals would be wearing jeans and long pants but when it was colder at night, everyone started wearing shorts and short dresses (someone please explain this to me). Aside from that, everyone was dressed fashionably, even the guys! Apparently, the fashion trend at the time was wearing a shirt or dress on top of another shirt, because everyone was wearing it.
Exhibit A:

Another thing that I found really interesting was that whenever girls did wear shorts and dresses, they always wore panty-hose (aka. stalkings) underneath them. I guess it hides some of your legs' imperfections or hides leg hair, which is pretty smart although probably uncomfortable to wear constantly.

Garbage:

Korea is really serious about sorting their garbage. Most restaurants had a bin for recycling, food waste, and anything else that's garbage, as well as an area specifically meant to hold cups. 

Even our apartment was super strict on sorting garbage. Trash had to be sorted by vinyl, paper, recyclable, food waste, and other garbage. I swear the most stressful part of our trip was trying to figure out what belongs where. Thankfully our building's security guard was super nice and helped us sort our garbage :) (although it was somewhat embarrassing showing him our trash). 

Side note: it was actually really hard to find garbage cans on the streets, the streets were really clean though...

Plumbing/Bathrooms:

Before coming to South Korea I did read a bit about how their plumbing system is not the greatest because the pipes are very old, so I was semi-prepared for what would come. However I wasn't mentally or physically prepared for not flushing my toilet paper down the toilet; which was the case in our apartment. However, most public bathrooms let you throw your paper down the toilet so a lot of times we ended up just using the subway station bathrooms (which are super clean by the way). The subway station also had a mixture of stalls with regular toilets and stalls with the squatter toilets.

I didn't even bother using the squatter toilets because I knew it would not end well (my terrible balance). Another interesting thing about public bathrooms is that there are rarely any soap dispensers, instead you will see this:

basically a bar of soap on a stick. 

Germaphobes would probably hate it but it was actually pretty cool and still did the job. I did notice though that most people didn't even wash their hands after they did their business which was kind of disturbing but whatever. 

You will also never find a decent working hand dryer in Seoul, even when we went to an expensive department store the hand dryer looked 100 years old and was broken. Also, a lot of bathrooms didn't have paper towels to dry your hands (this was especially the case in the subway bathrooms) so your pretty much SOL (shit out of luck) and have to resort to just shaking the water off your hands or just make sure to bring napkins or tissues with you.

Some other side notes that I found interesting:

- I never knew Korea had so many mountains! 

The landscape is VERY beautiful with the palaces, temples, and Namsan tower; especially when taking the AREX (airport express train) you can see many mountains and the Han river which is so beautiful. We also went on a tour to Nami Island and did a rail-bike ride nearby and the views were breathtaking (I'll probably make a separate post for the tours we went on).

- SAVE ANY NAPKINS YOU GET. 

Restaurants, especially when you order take-out, only give you one napkin or two if your really lucky and often times the napkins are small. I usually use about two or three napkins every time I eat so I would sometimes have to use toilet paper since our apartment didn't even have any tissues. Korea please stop being stingy with napkins!

- Koreans really like sauce... especially mayo. 

A lot of food I had in Seoul was over-sauced; salads, burgers, sandwiches, chicken, you name it. Mayo is on EVERYTHING. Not really, but it is on a lot of things (I had it on my salad once...) so if your not a fan of mayo, then good luck.

Hopefully this post was somewhat helpful or entertaining. I'll probably post more about my trip later on. Everything I mentioned is based on my views and trip to Seoul so it may be different from other people. Even though I only went for three weeks I really enjoyed traveling through Seoul. I would even consider living there :) (if I ever found a job).

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo vs. Moonlight Drawn By Clouds

Both Korean dramas Scarlet Heart Ryeo (SHR) and Moonlight Drawn By Clouds (MDBC) are both placed in the historical setting of Goryeo and have sadly come to an end. There are 3 major factors that make a drama awesome, these are: the storyline, camera work, and of course the acting of the cast.
So which drama wins?
*Please note this post is entirely based on my opinions

Storyline:
Tie
Even though I really like the storyline of SHR, it's a pretty common plot (girl travels through time and falls in love). The story would be a lot more unique and interesting if the drama focused more on the time travelling and differences between modern day Seoul and Goryeo.
MDBC is also a pretty common storyline where the female lead pretends to be a male. All in all both dramas have somewhat interesting storylines that aren't very original.

Camera Work:
Winner: Scarlet Heart Ryeo

Personally I preferred the camera work/angles for this drama over MDBC. The colours and lighting also made a big difference, where Scarlet Heart focused on more colourful clothes and imagery and MDBC focused more on the accuracy of historical facts.

Acting:
Winner: Moonlight Drawn By Clouds.

Even though I LOVED Lee Joon-Gi and IU's acting, overall MDBC had better actors that played their characters more convincingly. I was honestly concerned how innocent Park Bo Gum was going to play an arrogant crown prince, however he pulled off the role so well. Kim Yoo Jung's acting was also very realistic making me forget sometimes that her character is a female.
Probably the biggest reason why I chose MDBC over Scarlet Heart is because EXO's Baekhyun's acting in the first couple of episodes were not the greatest (he did improve later on however).

FINAL WINNER:

Scarlet Heart Ryeo

Even though I really enjoyed watching MDBC (especially Park Bo Gum <3), I was drawn more to Scarlet Heart's storyline. Scarlet Heart made we want to watch the drama EVERYDAY whereas MDBC I only felt like watching it once every two weeks. I actually kinda wished I held off watching the episodes of Scarlet Heart as they came out so I could marathon the series instead; I forgot how much torture it was to wait for new episodes.

Korean Dramas on TV

Now you can watch Korean dramas on TV in North America through the channel Omni2. The newest drama that will be airing on April 4th, 2016, is My Husband Got A Family aka You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly.
My Husband Got A Family is taking over the time slot (2pm every weekday) which was previously held by popular Korean drama, Boys Over Flowers.

Top 5 Most Underrated Korean Dramas

There are many Korean dramas that aren't well known but totally deserve to be; so I decided to list the top 5 most underrated Korean Dramas based off the dramas I have personally watched and loved.

1. D-Day

Plot:
A natural disaster strikes the city of Seoul. The whole city becomes paralyzed. Doctors and emergency personnel struggle to save the people. - AsianWiki

Actors:

Kim Young-Kwang (Pinocchio),  Jung So-Min (Playful Kiss), Lee Sungyeol (member of K-pop group, Infinite)

Thoughts:

Although some of the scenes can be a bit cheesy, the story line was very unique to average Korean dramas and the acting was excellent. If you are into watching medical/ world ending shows, this drama is a must watch!

2. Marriage, Not Dating

Plot:
A perfect man, Kong Ki-Tae (Yeon Woo-Jin), is forced to marry by his family, but he doesn't want to marry. To make his family give up, he introduces a woman, Joo Jang-Mi (Han Groo), to them that they would never accept. - AsianWiki

Actors:

Yeon Woo-Jin, Han Groo, Jinwoon (member of K-pop group, 2AM), Han Sun-Hwa (member of K-pop group, Secret)

Thoughts:

The two main leads have amazing chemistry which made me fall in love with both actors. The drama definitely lived up to its title as a romantic comedy; if you love that genre I recommend you watch it.
Warning:
It can get very addicting

3.Angry Mom

Plot:
When Jo Gang-Ja attended high school, she was notorious for fighting. She gave birth to her daughter A-Ran (Kim You-Jung) in her late teens and became more responsible. Her daughter A-Ran is now a high school student, but A-Ran is bullied at school. Jo Gang-Ja decides to become a high school student again to protect her daughter. - AsianWiki

Actors:

Kim Hee-Seon (Faith), Ji Hyun-Woo (Queen In-Hyun's Man), Kim You-Jung (Golden Rianbow), Baro (member of K-pop group, B1A4), Ji Soo (Cheer Up!), Lizzy (member of K-pop group, After School/Orange Caramel)

Thoughts:

Acting and story line was excellent, always had me on the edge of my seat with all the plot twists.
Warning:
You will fall in love with Ji Soo. I called him already!

4. Let's Eat

Plot:
A drama about the lives of four single people living on their own, hungry for food and love.

It will center around a 3-year divorcee experiencing things with the married and unmarried people a
round her. - Hancinema
Actors:
Lee Soo-Kyung (I Summon You, Gold!), Yoon Doo-Joon (member of K-pop group, Beast), Yoon So-Hee (Wild Chives and Soy Bean Soup), Shim Hyung-Tak (Ad Genius Lee Tae-Baek)
Warning:
Don't watch this drama on an empty stomach, it will cause cravings and severe hunger. Trust me you will regret it.

5. Gap Dong

Plot:

20 years ago Moo-Yeom’s (Yoon Sang-Hyun) father was a suspect in the "Gap Dong” serial murder case. Because of the detectives’ oppressive investigation, Moo-Yeom’s father killed himself.
Now, Moo-Yeom is a detective and works to capture the killer Gap Dong. The statue of limitations has expired for the serial murder case and Moo-Yeom resigns to the belief that Gap Dong is dead. New clues though for Gap Dong appears in front of Moo-Yeom and he sets out to catch him once and for all. - AsianWiki
Actors:
Yoon Sang-Hyun, Kim Min-Jung, Sung Dong-Il, Lee Joon, Kim Ji-Won
Thoughts:
Very intense thriller drama with many plot twists; cast was was also excellent.
Warning:
Lee Joon's smile may creep you out. Don't watch in a dark room alone at night.

Reply 1997 vs. 1994 vs. 1988

The three Reply series have been immensely popular and praised for the very accurate portrayal of life in those years (1997, 1994, 1988) in South Korea.
I will compare the three series and discuss the one I liked the most; these are my personal opinions so feel free to write your own in the comments.

Reply 1997

At first I thought the drama was pretty slow but it sure picked up and did not disappoint at all! The concept was very original and fresh. I loved how you did not know who the main girl's husband was right till the end of the drama. Apink's Eunji played the main female character and her acting was surprisingly very good, it also helped how relatable  her character was (fan-girling over all the idols). Overall I loved the show and recommend it to everyone.

Reply 1994

After loving Reply 1997 and finding out there would be another drama from the same series I was very excited. After watching the first couple of episodes I realized how different it was; yes you still had to guess who her husband was, but I found the characters weren't as lovable. I actually found the main female character extremely annoying so I stopped watching the drama.

Reply 1988

I was hesitant to watch this series just because I heard Girl's Day Hyeri was playing the main character and although I'm a fan of Girl's Day and Hyeri, I did not like her acting in some of the previous roles she played in dramas. However, after watching the drama I really started to like Hyeri's character as well as the other main characters. The many valuable lessons told in each episode as well as the portrayal of the lifestyle back in the day in Korea, made the show very interesting and fun to watch. The story focuses more on family and friends rather than just teen love, which makes the drama very refreshing and fun to watch.


Winner:

Overall I liked aspects from both the Reply 1997 and Reply 1988 series so it was really hard to decide which one I liked the most. However I would say Reply 1988 has been my favourite just because the characters are so likable and the drama never gets boring.

Whether it's to gain more awareness for their group or another source of income, many idols are turning to an acting career. Who are your favourite and least favourite idol actors?

Allkpop ALLSTAR - Kpop Dance Game

Looking for a fun way to spend your time and make friends also interested in Kpop and Korean Dramas? Well why not try Allkpop AlLSTAR!

The game is sort of like DDR where you try to hit the notes on time using your computer arrow keys. You can also dress up your character in the latest Kpop fashion and join a crew with other Kpop fans.

Right now the game is in open beta so the game is officially open to the public, however because it's still in beta there are a couple of problems that still need to be fixed.

Just a warning, if you are playing the game on your laptop the game screen will most likely not fit the screen meaning the bottom will be cut off (now works on full screen mode).

Another problem I've noticed is that for team play mode and certain dance stages there can be a lot of lag; especially during 'bonus time' and 'break time' when playing the dancing games.

Overall the game is pretty good with many quests that will not leave you bored. It's always fun to hang out and talk to other kpop fans from different countries as well.

Top 10 Kpop Songs of Summer 2015

Summer is the season for Kpop, especially this year as the girl group competition is fierce with comebacks from many popular groups. So in order to keep track of all the awesome songs coming out I've made a list of some of my favourite Kpop songs of this summer. It was very hard to order the songs and these are my personal opinions. If you haven't listened to any of the songs listed I definitely recommend you do!

1. GOT7 - Just Right

I wasn't a huge fan of Got7's previous songs but this one is awesome and extremely catchy!

2. Girls Generation - Party

Girls Generation continues to put out good music. Truthfully I wasn't a fan of the song when I first heard it but after listening to it more it became addicting and definitely fit the summer mood.

3. Nine Muses - Hurt Locker

I've always found Nine Muses' songs to be decent but never as good as this song is, the dance is also really good but maybe that's just because they are all models.

4. AOA - Heart Attack
Once again AOA comes back with another addicting song. I hated the dance at first but it grows on you the more you watch it.

5. Sistar - Shake it
I was also disappointed when I first heard this song but it grows on you and becomes a fun song to listen to

6. Mamamoo - Um Oh Ah Yeh
Mamamoo did not disappoint, fun song and very promising rookie group. I'm looking forward to their future songs.

7. BTS - Dope

8. Big Bang - Sober

9. Super Junior - Devil

10. Infinite - Bad


My least favourite songs of the summer:

1. Girls Day - Ring My Bell
I've loved the majority of Girls Day's songs so I was extremely disappointed when I heard this one. It reminded me a lot of Two X's Ring Ma Bell which I like way more.

2. Goo Hara - Choco Chip Cookies
One word describes the song and music video, boring. Goo Hara is definitely pretty but her voice is so boring and unoriginal. Seungyeon should have gotten a solo before Hara.

3. Apink - Remember
Song was okay but wasn't as catchy as their previous ones.

Big Bang 2015 World Tour

Big Bang's 2015 'MADE' tour is coming to Toronto, Canada! The concert will be on Tuesday, October 13 at 8:00pm EST at the Air Canada Centre.
Tickets for the concert went on sale Friday, June 12th at 10:00am EST.

The only thing I am really curious about now is who the opening act will be; I'm thinking it might be rookie groups Winner or iKON. Either way, I am really excited to finally see big bang live!

EXO "Love Me Right" MV Review

EXO is back once again with the release of their 2nd Repackaged Album "Love Me Right"!

Song:
When I first heard the song I thought it was just okay and that "Call Me Baby" sounded better. After listening to it more, it became really catchy and fun to listen to. EXO always produces good music so I'm looking forward to listening to the other new songs on their repackaged album.

The new songs on the album are:

Music Video:
The theme is obviously football for some reason, so then why are they randomly swinging baseball bats in some of the scenes...
I personally don't like the football theme but they all look amazing in the uniforms.
I'm also really glad Xiumin is getting more parts in their songs and music videos. (If you couldn't already tell, he's my bias <3)

The song and dance are as awesome as usual and I can't wait to see them perform on music shows!

Orange Marmalade Episode 1

Honestly, I was very hesitant to watch this drama mainly because Idol actors are generally a hit or miss for me. Nonetheless I decided to watch the first episode as I am waiting for more episodes of School 2015.

Plot:

The story is based off the webtoon of the same name and is about a teenage girl named Baek Ma Ri who tries to hid the fact that shes a vampire. Jae-Min who is a popular student ends up falling in love with Baek Ma Ri who is a new transfer student.

I actually started reading the webtoon in the middle of last year from the LINE Webtoon App but I stopped reading it once I deleted the app and I never got around to continuing it.

Acting:

I was surprised to see how grown up Yeo Jin Goo is now, he's even more handsome now but his hairstyle in the drama just doesn't do him justice. I became a noona fan when I saw him in I Miss You, and Potato Star 2013QR3. His acting is very mature and so I was looking forward to seeing him in this drama. 

His acting in this drama so far was pretty good although his character is very different from the one in the webtoon.

CN Blue's Lee Jong Hyun also stars in the drama as Han Shi Hoo. I really enjoyed watching Jong Hyun in A Gentleman's Dignity so I had high hopes for him in this drama. So far I am unsure whether I like his acting in Orange Marmalade or not; it was very overreacted but maybe that's just his character. Hopefully his acting will improve as more episodes come out.

I'm still a little hesitant about AOA's Seolhyun's acting but so far it's okay. She fits the character well and portrays Baek Ma Ri pretty much the same as how I imagined her to be.

Would I continue to watch more episodes? Yes

The cast and acting is pretty good and the story seems interesting and a little different from the webtoon so I am interested to see how the story develops.

EXO Next Door vs. GOT7 Dream Knight

After watching a couple of episodes of both EXO Next Door and GOT7 Dream Knights, I rated each short series based on a set of criteria.
I am a fan of both EXO and GOT7 so I tried watching and rating these series without bias.
This is just my opinion, feel free to comment on whether you agree or not and which series you preferred most.

EXO Next Door

Plot:
7/10
-Hot guys move in next door to main girl (every girls fantasy).

Acting: 
8/10
-D.O is a really good actor and I was surprised at how good Chanyeol's acting was too.
-Worst acting was probably Sehun and Baekhyun but overall the acting was decent.
Edit: Suho's acting was the worst, thankfully he didn't play a big role.

Overall: 
7.5/10
-Hate the CG blush, it makes the main girl look like a red smurf.
-First couple of episodes were pretty funny and interesting, I wouldn't mind watching more episodes to see how the story develops.

GOT7 Dream Knight

Plot: 
6.5/10
-Typical bullied orphan girl gets saved by random hot guys who she can call upon at any time and happen to have magical powers (also every girls fantasy).

Acting: 
7/10
-JB was probably the best actor and I was pleasantly surprised by Jacksons's acting.The rest of the GOT7 members were pretty decent as well.
-Worst acting was probably Mark.
-Song Ha Yoon can be a little annoying but she's pretty good at acting (aside from that horrible "fall" on the road in episode 2).

Overall: 
6/10
-SOOO Cheesy! Sometimes it was hilarious but sometimes it was annoying (almost made me want to stop watching), but I will still try to watch more episodes just to see if it gets better.
-The camera movement was really random sometimes and almost made me sick at one point from all the movement. (note to self: don't watch on full screen mode)
- Aside from that I absolutely loved all the cameos especially the JYP moon!

Verdict:
I personally preferred EXO Next Door only because it wasn't as cheesy as GOT7's Dream Knight. Both short series however were very entertaining and had many funny moments.

Interesting New Drama

I recently started watching this new Korean drama called 'School 2015' and it's very interesting so far. 

The drama is related to the 'School' series that started in 1999 that focuses on the issues Korean students face such as bullying and suicide. 

A couple of year ago I watched 'School 2013' and I ended up loving the drama and the cast who rose to stardom (Lee Jong Suk and Kim Woo bin); so when I heard another series was coming out and Kim So Hyun was playing the lead, I was very excited to start watching it and so far it has not disappointed me. 

At first I was a little nervous that the storyline would be too similar to the previous drama but from the episodes I've watched it's completely different. In my opinion, this drama gives off a less serious vibe than the previous one as it's a little more unrealistic; nonetheless it was very interesting and entertaining and I would recommend it to anybody looking for a good Korean drama to watch.

Recommended Korean Drama

I recently found a very interesting Korean drama that I recommend everyone should watch. The drama is called "Angry Mom" which is about a young mother who finds out her daughter is being bullied in school so she decides to become a high school student to protect her daughter.

Cast:

When I first heard the storyline and saw the poster for the drama, I for some reason thought it would be sort of a romantic comedy; I was dead wrong. It has a lot of drama but not too much that it becomes cheesy and soap opera like. There is a touch of comedy however to lighten the mood at times. The cast is also made up of very talented actors/actresses who play their roles convincingly. 

So I definitely recommend this drama to anyone looking for a new interesting drama to watch; you will never be bored watching it, trust me!

Roommate Officially Cancelled

The popular Korean variety show is officially cancelled. There were originally plans for a season 3 with a new cast but it has been revealed that the show will be cancelled all together. Honestly I am not that surprised since the show has been receiving bad ratings in Korea even though it's extremely popular overseas.

Roommate was one of my favourite Korean variety shows. I preferred the second season over the first season as the cast members were always fun and entertaining. It is sad to hear that the last episode will be airing next week.

My favorite roommate episode of all time was the most recent episode, episode 45. If you have not seen it yet you definitely should. I was laughing for hours and fangirling over all the Jackji moments (Jackson from GOT7 and Youngji from Kara).

Top 10 Japanese Dramas

Here is a list of my top 10 all-time favourite Japanese dramas, in no particular order. (I'm probably forgetting some but oh well). If you haven't already, you should definitely check out these dramas, you won't regret it!

1. Hana Yori Dango

Before Boys Over Flowers, there was Hana Yori Dango, which was originally a manga. Probably one of the most famous Japanese dramas that shot all the actors into stardom. Very good storyline that will never make you bored. Side note: the main characters' actors are dating in real life!

2. Hana Kimi

Another very popular Japanese drama, Also originally a manga, very good cast and fun story.

3. Ryusei No Kizuna

Awesome story line that will leave you crying. If you haven't already, you must watch this drama! Cast did an amazing job as usual.

4. Liar Game

Also originally a manga and has a Korean adaptation; in a later post I compared both versions.

5. Gokusen

Originally a manga. One of my favourite Japanese dramas of all times. It can be very inspiring and the actors did a really good job. Love This drama!

6. Zettai Kareshi

Originally a manga called Absolute Boyfriend and is now made into a Chinese version of the same title. Very interesting plot and good acting.

7. Keizoku 2: SPEC

Toda Erika plays the female main character and if you couldn't already tell I am a huge fan of her dramas. Originally, I was hesitant to watch it but I became hooked after the first episode.

8. Code Blue

Usually I am not a fan of medical dramas but this one actually made me start liking them. It was so awesome I've watched both seasons 3 times.

9. Nobuta Wo Produce

At first I didn't really care for this drama but after a couple of episodes I started loving it. The main reason why I watched it and loved it though was because of Kame (Kamenashi Kazuya, member of KAT-TUN) and Yamapi (Yamashita Tomohisa, ex-member of NEWS).

10. Seigi no Mikata

Another one of my all-time favourite dramas. Actors are amazing and characters are very funny. The older sister is definitely my favourite character in the whole show; even though she can be "evil" it always ends up benefiting others. Side note: the actress who plays the older sister is also the wife of actor Oguri Shun.
